About me

carl adamsI am an experienced Counsellor that is based in person centred therapy but I believe in being open to other models of counselling and using other models of therapy as it suits the client’s needs, this is called integrative counselling. I am open minded about all aspects of therapy and of course my clients own experience and issues.

I started my counselling career at Relate who were branching out into youth counselling at that time. Since establishing myself as a private therapist I have continued to work with youth as well as adults. I work with many children and young people in foster care and also with adult foster carers. I currently work with 2 major Fostering agencies in Essex. I am also experienced in working with many adults from many different walks of life, ethnic back grounds and ages.

Life can sometimes be tough with day to day work or family pressures or maybe there are unresolved issues from the past that need to be worked through. Many years ago I embarked on my own counselling journey, I think it’s important that a counsellor knows what it’s like to be have sat in the clients chair and how difficult it can be to actually get to that point. Making that first step to seek help can be hard. I know what it is like to be in a bad place. I found the interaction, understanding and empathy I received in therapy helped me immensely. I want to help others find the answers, peace and the understanding they need as they embark on their own counselling journey.

Sometimes talking about something out loud may be something buried or unspoken can bring a whole new perspective and many opportunities for change and growth. I provide a safe non judgemental environment for you to explore all issues. I pride myself on being open minded, friendly and empathic and I've been told by clients and fellow counsellors that I am natural, intuitive and warm. I know how difficult that first step can be and my aim is to make that first step as comfortable for the client as I can.

I am experienced at working with many of the following issues with both adults and youth; anger and anxiety, depression, low self-confidence, low self-esteem, body image, stress, feeling low and demotivated, loneliness, isolation, identity, culture, bullying, sexual abuse, drugs and alcohol and associated feelings, panic, emotional abuse, self harm, relationship issues, sexuality, guilt, shame, loss, pain, spirituality, school related pressure. Therapy can also be used as a weekly form of support for the daily pressures that life brings us such as work issues and pressure of life direction or family problems, a regular place to be heard and feel supported.

Please feel free to e mail or phone if there is anything you would like to discuss with me. I am always happy to take the time to talk things through.
